READY PLAYER ONE – ERNEST CLINE [REVIEW]

A couple of years ago, a bloke called Ernest Cline wrote a film called ‘Fanboys‘, about a group of friends coming together to help a friend with terminal cancer see ‘The Phantom Menace‘ before release.

Some dying wish, huh?

It was a lovely ode to nerd culture, the importance of human connection, made with love and reverence for fandom, Star Wars and growing up geek.

A few years later, he’s back paying tribute to more obsessions of his youth – this time, video games, in his debut novel, ‘Ready Player One‘. It’s a much more ambitious work, a big greasy cheeseburger of a novel.

THE ARTIST [PREVIEW]

I wish I’d been born in the era of silent movies. Being able to listen to my iPod while watching a film at the same sounds wonderful.

GOTHAM CITY IMPOSTORS [PREVIEW]

Can I just say that I’m really, really loving this Bat-renaissance? As a rather rabid fan of the Caped Crusader, I’m really digging on the Nolan Films, the DC animated films, the Arkham series of video games and now, the XBLA-exclusive multiplayer shooter, Gotham City Impostors.

MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: GHOST PROTOCOL [REVIEW]

SPOILER ALERT: This movie is freaking awesome.

I saw the latest addition to the Ethan Hunt story last night and spent a lot of my time sharing slack-jawed looks of joy with my friend. My usual opinion of action flicks isn’t a positive one, but Brad Bird nailed it here. No surprise really, given that ‘The Incredibles‘ is one of my favourite movies of all time.

Here’s a quick summary of the film: Action. Action. Plot. Action. Comedy. Action. Plot. Action. Action. Sexy girl fight. Action. Plot. Action. Action. Plot. End credits.

HOW TO COME OUT AS A GEEK

When I was a child I had to turn to others for the advice that should have been handed down from those whose loins I sprung from. I learned how to shave from my local vet, how to cuddle from the nice man in the park and how to make a shiv out of just about anything from my grandma. It wasn’t that my parents didn’t know these things, it was just that with them being convicted horse thieves we didn’t get much quality time together.
