HUGO: MORE THAN MEETS THE WHIMSICAL CLOCKWORK EYE.

Three weeks ago Mike and I got married and our entire wedding theme was based on the films of Georges Méliès. Of course I had no idea that was his name when creating my theme rather, I was channelling the whimsical insanity of films such Le Voyage Dans La Lune that I’d seen on YouTube. Our invitations were a print of an Edwardian couple sitting on a moonlit beach, our wedding menus contained Edwardian carnival-style imagery, our toasting flutes were embossed with vintage skull designs. My entire dream was to create something magical, surreal and of course very, very Edwardian.

FIREFLY: BLINK AND YOU’LL MISS IT

Recently my geek esteem took a battering when I found myself in a debate about the best Firefly character (Wash) and I realised I was handicapped in backing up my arguments by the fact that my memories of the show were like a leaf on the wind – mostly symbolic, and tinged with an inexplicable sadness. DISCWORLD: ANKH-MORPORK [REVIEW]

I was worried when I heard about the new Discworld: Ankh-Morpork game. Book, movie and TV-show themed board games often work better as something to round out the collection, rather than a game you’d actually want to play. Would this game live up to the Discworld name or would it be another version of Star Wars: Monopoly?

For example, take the 2002 game, “Thud”, by Trevor Truran. Essentially, it was an abstract game with a Discworld costume thrown on top. Imagine a game of chess where your side is made up of one piece only, but different from your opponent’s. It had some interesting mechanisms and was by no means the worst game in the world, but it didn’t shake my world either. It was the type of game that would probably require several plays before you really got into swing of it. Unfortunately by that time you’d probably also realised that it wasn’t very fun.

AMERICA, PLEASE LEAVE OUR SHERLOCK ALONE

My new best friends

Obviously, you know and love the BBC television series, Sherlock. If you don’t, I don’t even know why you’re here. Go buy the series on DVD, steal it from a friend or fly to England and watch them film it live. I don’t really care, just watch it.

Obviously, Sherlock is about the famous consulting detective, Sherlock Holmes. Instead of being set in medieval Pakistan or wherever the original book was set, this series is set in 21st century London. Sherlock solves crimes and insults people, Watson fetches his tea and gets insulted by people.

SUPERNATURAL SELECTION: DEATH OF A GENRE

There has been a silent war raging for the past few years, and at this point, it seems that the wrong side has all but won. The land of Supernatural Fiction, once an arguably strong, proud and vaguely nerdy genre has suffered devastating losses and is now virtually a wasteland.

Dr Jekyll sits slumped and defeated as he earns what money he can by babysitting the over-primped and spoilt offspring of Bella and Edward as they smugly oversee a shabbily dressed Giles and Wesley wallpapering their ten-storey mansion with cash. In the living room, Oz is locked in a cage overseen by Jacob Black. The mail arrives. “You know what to do” growls Jacob. Continue reading
